Applying to Hong Kong Universities with OSSD: Non-JUPAS Checklist

OSSD students can consider Hong Kong university applications where the institution accepts their qualification. Before selecting courses, check the university’s current entry-year rules, the intended programme’s prerequisites and your correct application route. Completing OSSD does not guarantee an offer.

Does a Hong Kong university accept OSSD?

The University of Hong Kong publishes an Ontario qualification entry under its admissions standards. Its requirements refer to completion of OSSD and Grade 12 4U/4M courses. Read the official Ontario qualification page and international qualifications application guidance for current details. Do not assume that another university or every programme uses the same rules.

Non-JUPAS is not the same as non-local status

Your qualification, application route and local/non-local classification must be checked separately. Studying a Canadian curriculum does not by itself determine your status. Students taking both HKDSE and OSSD should ask each admissions office which route to use, which records to disclose and whether simultaneous applications are permitted.

Check three layers of requirements

  1. Diploma: whether the complete OSSD is required and the final document deadline.
  2. Courses and grades: required Grade 12 course levels, how the average is calculated, subject prerequisites and individual grade conditions.
  3. Additional criteria: language evidence, interviews, portfolios, references or supplementary submissions.

A course needed for graduation is not automatically a course counted in a university admission average. Check the code and level of every intended subject.

Build a programme-by-programme comparison

Record each university and programme, its official source link, the date checked, required subjects and submission deadlines. Ask the admissions office directly about unresolved points and keep the written reply. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, as HKU’s official guidance explains.
